about

this was a (very) limited edition tape, handed around sometime in '89. Recorded at home (ie. in the rehearsal space, same house as pictured, 118 Vulture st Sth Brisbane, but not the same room) using a pair of PZM mics, direct to 2 tracks of a Tascam244, then mixed/EQ'd (with no effects) to cassette with a Sony GXC. It was our first jam since Pat Ridgewell left the band to focus on SWE smallworldexperience.net and, typically unpredictable, Clare set up a mic and sang (in Unhappy and Million Miles) for the first time, wonderfully. Circles was written that day (this would be the 3rd or 4th take); Eugene found Ian's lyrics book, and asked him for a few riffs/chords on bass, and suggested the intro. Eugene wrote Unhappy. Million Miles and Diamond; typically, the band would play such songs quite differently at every occasion. The other tracks 5-7 are selections of the band jamming/improvising one-off ideas (ie. that were not played prior, or again). This lineup of the Holy Ghosts played countless gigs from 89-91 (headling various shows, as well as supports for Bailter Space, Sonic Youth, Venom P. Stinger, etc.) and released 2 other cassettes: "Horses" (a doubleLP-length tape) and "Wounded", a live album which is has been made available (free download) at this blog stripedsunlight.blogspot.com/2008/09/holy-ghosts-live-alliiance-hotel-gig.html and there are also unreleased recordings of earlier lineups. Worth mentioning perhaps are also Eugene's solo tapes (and vinyl LP) from the same time (under the name DNE) and an unreleased collaboration between Clare McKenna and (visual, as a rule) artist Dienna Georgetti, as well as unreleased recordings of earlier lineups of the Holy Ghosts. The band grew out of an earlier group, The Closesthing, which also has some LP tapes, quite limited edition at the time.. (ie. watch this space, but don't hold your breath ++ian)
